General Dynamics Itronix Donates Computers to Humanitarian Expedition Fighting Malaria in Africa
Leading Maker of Rugged Computers Donates GoBook® XR-1 Notebooks to Support Zambezi Expedition 2008

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. – General Dynamics Itronix, an industry leading maker of rugged notebook computers, has donated several rugged GoBook XR-1 notebooks to the Zambezi Expedition 2008: Fighting Malaria on the “River of Life.” The XR-1 computers will be used for communications and to edit photography and short videos documenting the Expedition.

Launching in early April, the two-month expedition will travel along the Zambezi River, Africa’s fourth longest and largest river flowing into the Indian Ocean. The Expedition will reach remote populations in six countries as it travels in inflatable boats through Zambia, Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and finally to the river delta in Mozambique. Doctors and specialists will deliver lifesaving medications, mosquito nets and educational materials to villages along the water’s edge.

“Malaria kills more African children than any other disease: 3,000 children a day and more than one million people a year,” said Helge Bendl, Zambezi Expedition leader. “The Zambezi Expedition is aimed at publicizing the desperate conditions and raising money to fight the disease. We are thankful to have General Dynamics Itronix support our expedition with the donation of GoBook XR-1 notebooks. We needed notebooks that are both rugged enough for a two-month trip in the heart of Africa and powerful enough so photographers and videographers can use them to document our efforts to help rid the world of malaria.”

Under the patronage of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership, the timing of the Zambezi Expedition aligns with the commemoration of Africa and World Malaria Day, April 25, 2008. The expedition will also promote a new initiative being developed by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to reduce the malaria deaths along the river by 50 percent by 2010.
